Concise Bible Commentary (Congregationalist)

First published as the Christian Workers Commentary.

Christian workers’ commentary on the Old and New Testaments, arranged in sections with questions for use in family altars and in adult Bible classes. Containing homiletic and expository suggestions for young preachers. Also an index of texts and themes receiving special treatment.

James Gray, president of the Moody Bible Institute from 1904-34, hoped that this commentary could serve to educate the Christian laity. “Fundamental to any first- hand knowledge of the Bible is the reading of the Holy Book itself,” he writes in the introduction. He makes clear that his commentary, if it has any value, should kindle a desire in its readers to study the Bible itself more deeply on their own. He suggests that people use the commentary in adult Bible classes, expository preaching, and family devotions. Today, readers can still use Gray’s work as he intended, but one can also study it as an historical piece, particularly as a look into early 20th century Evangelical biblical hermeneutics. The class, Advanced Bible Searches NEAR shows you how to use the search NEAR function in theWord. This function will allow searching for situations where the word "Son" "Christ" are within so many words or verses of each other, but not necessarily next to each other. This is a very powerful function that is totally lacking in other Bible programs. You "loosely" search for two words or phrases that are just "near each other."

Missionary on Furlough Spiritual Needs is an article by David Cox (veteran missionary) to help pastors and missionaries understand missionary needs.
Excerpt: When a pastor "takes in a missionary on deputation or furlough", he ministers to that missionary.... Pastors also need this encouragement as much as missionaries need it. When they get together to fellowship, they are able to encourage one another. But every pastor ministering to a returning missionary should encourage them along these lines of faithfulness and reward in eternity.
